iGaming Payment Methods
23% of players leave when their preferred method isn't available. But "more methods = better" is wrong. This guide: every method evaluated on cost, payout support, chargeback risk, and adoption.
In iGaming, payment method diversity isn't a UX feature. It's a revenue driver. But each method means integration effort, maintenance, reconciliation, and compliance. 30 methods at 2% usage each is overhead without value.
This guide is for operators, not players. Every method evaluated on 6 parameters: operator cost, deposit/payout support, regional relevance, chargeback risk, integration complexity, and player adoption. Data from 20 provider reviews.

Payment Method Share by Region (2026)
One number from this table is worth the entire guide: if you launch in Nordics without Open Banking you lose 50% of potential deposits. In Brazil without PIX: 55%. Payment method mix is determined by the market, not your preferences.

Cards: Still the Backbone, But Declining
Card Decline Breakdown
20-40% of card deposits fail in iGaming. Here's why.
| Reason | % of Declines | Fixable? |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer block (gambling MCC) | 25-35% | No. Offer alternatives. |
| Insufficient funds | 15-20% | No. Player issue. |
| 3DS authentication failure | 15-25% | Yes. Optimize 3DS, exemptions. |
| Fraud system decline | 10-15% | Yes. Tune rules, reduce FPs. |
| Card expired/invalid | 5-10% | No. Player needs new card. |
| Velocity/limit exceeded | 5-10% | Partially. Adjust limits. |
Revenue impact: 1,000 attempts/day × $50 avg × 30% decline × 75% abandon = $11,250 lost per day = $4.1M/year

E-Wallets: The iGaming Favorite
Wallet Comparison
| Wallet | Owner | Focus | Deposit | Payout | Adoption |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skrill | Paysafe | iGaming heritage | ✓ | ✓ | Very High |
| Neteller | Paysafe | iGaming heritage | ✓ | ✓ | Very High |
| PayPal | Independent | Selective gambling | ✓ | ✓ | Medium |
| MiFinity | Independent | iGaming native | ✓ | ✓ | Growing |
| Jeton | Independent | iGaming focused | ✓ | ✓ | Growing |
| Apple Pay | Apple | General | ✓ | ✗ | Growing |
| Google Pay | General | ✓ | ✗ | Growing |
Key advantage: E-wallet chargebacks go through the wallet provider, not Visa/MC. They don't hit your card chargeback ratio. Cost: 1-3% per tx. Near-zero decline rate (pre-funded).
Why E-Wallets Win in iGaming

Open Banking: Fastest-Growing Method
Open Banking vs Cards
| Metric | Cards | Open Banking | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operator cost | 3-7% | 0.5-2% | Save 2-5% per tx |
| Chargeback risk | 2-4% | 0% | Eliminates chargebacks |
| Decline rate | 20-40% | 5-8% | 2-5x better conversion |
| Settlement | T+2-7 | T+0-1 | Faster cash flow |
| Payout speed | 1-5 days | Instant | Instant satisfaction |
Savings example: $500K/mo, shift 30% to Open Banking → $6,000/mo saved on processing alone + zero chargebacks on that volume.
Crypto: Niche or Necessity?
0.5-1.5% per tx. Zero chargebacks. Instant settlement. 24/7. No rolling reserve. The economics are compelling, but adoption is 5-10% globally (25%+ offshore).
Start with USDT + USDC. Covers 70%+ of crypto deposits without volatility. Add BTC for brand, auto-convert to fiat.

FAQ
Depends on your target market. UK: debit cards + PayPal + Trustly. EU (MGA): cards + Skrill/Neteller + Trustly. Brazil: PIX + local cards + AstroPay. Minimum 3-4 methods per market covering 80%+ of player preferences. See our market launch checklist for specific recommendations.
Crypto (0.5-1.5%) and Open Banking (0.5-2%) are cheapest. Cards are most expensive (3-7%). But cheapest doesn't mean best. Choose methods your players actually use. A payment method nobody uses costs you nothing in fees but everything in lost deposits.
As a supplement, yes, if your target market includes crypto users (offshore, LATAM, Asia, VIP segments). Start with USDT + USDC to avoid volatility. Don't replace fiat. If you're EU-focused, verify your crypto provider has MiCA compliance.
Gambling MCC code 7995 triggers automatic blocks at many issuing banks. Cross-border transactions decline more often. 3DS adds friction. Typical iGaming card decline rate: 20-40%. Solutions: local acquiring, 3DS optimization, cascade routing, and offering alternative methods for declined players.
Direct bank-to-bank payments via PSD2 APIs. Cheaper than cards (0.5-2%), zero chargebacks, instant deposits. Must-have for Nordics (50% of deposits), growing fast across EU. Providers: Trustly, Brite. Limited outside EU for now.
Not in UK (banned 2020), Australia (2023), Brazil (April 2026), Belgium, or Pennsylvania. Even where allowed, credit cards carry the highest chargeback risk of any payment method.
5-7 for a single market. 10-15 for multi-market operations. Follow the 80/20 rule: top 3-4 methods per market cover 80% of deposits. Each additional method under 2% usage adds complexity without meaningful revenue.
Open Banking, crypto, bank transfers, prepaid cards/vouchers, and mobile money. Only card payments and some e-wallet scenarios carry chargeback risk through card networks.
