Regulator, licensing and what it means for payments

Egypt has no domestic gambling regulation, and online betting is illegal in practice, yet offshore books serve Egyptian players. The state began pushing back in 2026. Authorities started blocking betting sites and apps in February 2026, and parliament is preparing amendments to the Cybercrime Law that would make online betting a crime, with penalties up to life imprisonment in the most serious cases. The Central Bank tracks gambling-linked transactions, and banks must report suspicious ones. Enforcement stays light on players, so processing is the binding constraint, and offshore deposits reach the local rails only through aggregators and collector accounts.
