What the rule actually is in Uganda
Our own reading, not a summary of someone else's
Licensed by the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board, and the tax structure was harmonised from 1 July 2026: a single 30% of GGR across betting and gaming, replacing a split that charged gaming 30% and betting 20%, plus 15% withheld on net player winnings. A foreign online sportsbook budgets around UGX100m in initial fees, with East African nationals paying half. Bettor accounts must be linked to a phone number, which is less a compliance footnote than a description of the market: deposits are mobile money, and an operator without MTN and Airtel wallet integrations has no cashier at all.
How money actually moves
The rails players reach for, in the order that matters locally
- MTN Mobile Moneydominant
mobile money
The largest wallet and the default deposit rail; a direct biller code rather than aggregator routing is what drives approval rates and payout reliability.
- Airtel Moneymajor
mobile money
The number two network wallet, carried for coverage and fee pressure rather than for extra reach.
