What the rule actually is in Tanzania
Our own reading, not a summary of someone else's
Licensed by the Gaming Board of Tanzania, and mobile money is not one option among several here, it is the market. Online betting and casino are taxed at 25% of GGR after sports betting moved off a 6% levy on stakes, with land-based casinos at 18%. A 5% excise on betting stakes went into the 2026/27 budget for 1 July 2026 and needs parliament to confirm it. A stake-based levy stacked on a GGR tax is exactly what pushes operators to squeeze deposit costs, which is where a direct mobile-money integration pays for itself.
How money actually moves
The rails players reach for, in the order that matters locally
- Vodacom M-Pesadominant
mobile money
The default wallet and the single largest deposit rail. A direct integration on a dedicated shortcode beats aggregator routing on both fee and payout reliability.
- Airtel Moneymajor
mobile money
The number two network wallet, carried for redundancy and price pressure more than for extra reach.
- Mixx by Yas (Tigo Pesa)major
mobile money
The rebranded Tigo Pesa. It is the third wallet a cashier needs before it genuinely covers the market.
